The process was to take seven years and was in no small part carried out by Cesar Martinelli. His enterprise employed over 100 men, the majority were French but it also included some Italians, Poles and even German prisoners.
His achievements were many, he built a church in the nearby commune of Giel and was also responsible for building a new bridge which is in use to this day.
We are very grateful to his daughter and son-in-law, Monsieur and Madame Cornevin-Hayton, for helping us with this fascinating insight into recent history and letting us have some wonderful photographs.
