The bridge over the River Orne here had been an important crossing point and therefore the village suffered greatly as the Allies fought with the retreating Germans. Le Bosquet looking down over the river appears to have survived relatively unscathed which may in some part have been due to the huge red cross on the roof showing its use as a hospital and clearly visible in this photograph.
The remains of a British tank can also be seen on its side in the river close to the far bank.
